Cat in the Hat Month Update: The Feedback Loop

Brothers, we have had a lot of feedback come to us about the SigEp Feds Cat in the Hat Month event. Here are just a couple of the kind words we have received about two of our participants on Read Across America Day.

To the SigEp Feds,

I just wanted to let you know that Roger Gilbertson came in last week, Wednesday because of the weather, and the kids had a fantastic time. He was a great Dr. Seuss representative and it was definitely a fun break from the normal everyday operations. We definitely want to stay on your list for next year!

Thank you,

Hi,

Thank you very much for the opportunity for Ed Potter to read to our students. He did a great job the students really enjoyed it. We would definitely like to do this again next year.

Ice Capades:
SigEp Feds/ΚΔ Mixer Recap

Last night, we had a wonderful mixer with the alumni ladies of ΚΔ. In fact, we have a couple pictures documenting the evidence. Armie, who is pictured a couple times, was on ice skates for the first time. I was there with my daughter for about an hour and caught a couple pictures and chatted a bit with everyone.

In all, there were five representatives from each organization making for a quaint but fun turnout.

Please feel free to click on any of the pictures below for a larger view. I can't wait until we do this again.

We’ve Moved: To the Same Location

By now, you must be asking yourself, what the heck the title of this post is all about. I would like to be the first to welcome you back to SigEpFeds.org or officially welcome you, if this is your first visit.

After thinking about it and mentioning it at the last couple of meetings, we have recently migrated the same old domain name of SigEpFeds.org to a new location. That's right, the SigEp Feds Web site is now a Blog/Web site or some amalgamation thereof. The blog has the same functionality as the Web site but expands upon it in ways that the Web site could only struggle to keep up with.

Here are some of the ways in which hosting the SigEp Feds domain name on a blog benefits the group:

  • » We still have access to all of the same great information through links on the sidebar to the right →
  • » Once a new event is created/chosen to be hosted, we can update the blog and right there at the top you will know exactly what is going on, or you can select the Events link on the sidebar and find out what is going on right away.
  • » Hosting the feed via RSS allows you to never have to visit the SigEp Feds address again and yet still remain updated on what is happening and what items are up for discussion at any time using a feed reader or RSS service such as BlogRovr if you are familiar with that sort of thing; if you're not, learn more about what RSS can do for you.
  • » Anyone who is authorized can post without relying on one person to make sure that it is done
  • » Anyone can submit an item for discussion (this would depend on our members supplying comments about the post so that a two-way dialog can take place, and I have full faith that it will one day become a reality).
  • » We now have, all on one page, a calendar, links to our social network pages, a link to subscribe via RSS or via e-mail alert, photos, chapter and other related links, and if you click on the link of the visitor count, you too can view our visitor statistics at any time.

So, we hope you can see why we have chosen to transition the SigEp Feds Web site into a blog and why it is the preferred platform to host our happenings.

What do you think of this change in direction for the SigEpFeds.org URL? Does this change in direction work for you?

Feel free to post a comment and be sure to tell your brothers and colleagues about it.

Cat in the Hat Month: Coming Soon!

Cat in the Hat Month Every March

March is Dr. Seuss MonthThe SigEp Feds initiated a new program in 2007 to introduce D.C.-area kids to the literary works of Dr. Seuss, a.k.a Theodore Geisel. Geisel who was a ΣΦΕ brother at Dartmouth University.

SigEp Feds alumni volunteers coordinate the program with elementary schools and after-school clubs such as the Boys & Girls Clubs and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The program involves volunteers reading popular works of Dr. Seuss to kids.

Seuss Month is coming up in March and we need your help! We need volunteer readers for several more schools. Please contact Brandt Heatherington if you can volunteer during the first week in March 2009. Currently, all reading engagements are for the first week in March. If others are added for later in the month, they will be updated here.

Please contact Brandt Heatherington [BrandtH605@aol.com] at 703.307.1574 to volunteer.

Feedback from a participant
Brother Robert Gilbertson
(Retired Rear Admiral, US Navy)

What a superb idea!

I read to small children in elementary school on the birthday of Dr. Suess! I'm glad I volunteered.

My reading was to the Gage-Eckington School in LeDroit Park - near Howard University -in Washington. There were about 35 pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students there - and perhaps a dozen teachers, aides, and the principal. I read for about an hour - with plenty of audience participation. I read the stories they requested - and already knew - so they could chime in whenever they wanted to. Reading is truly fundamental - SigEp is lucky to have had Dr. Seuss as a member. His creativity has stimulated so manyyoung minds. An excellent example of what a "Balanced Man" can do.

I'm in for next year.
